Artist: Pietro Mancuso

Pietro Mancuso was born in Valdobbiadene, in the Treviso area, on 9 September 1944. Like many other peers, in the 1960s he travelled around Europe searching for work: he moved to Switzerland and then to the Netherlands. He has become passionate about art over time, visiting ancient cathedrals and the major collections of foreign public museums, choosing to devote himself completely to painting in the moment he approached the expressionist works by Kirchner, Heckel and Kokoschka.

Returned to his homeland in 1967, he completed his learning by studying the Venetian masters of the sixteenth century; since then, he has been working in his solitary studio between the vineyard hills of Valdobbiadene and the banks of the Piave river. In addition to oil painting, he also dedicates himself to sculpture experimenting with different techniques. In his essentially self-taught artistic career, Mancuso reached the vision of the great masters of Symbolism and Metaphysical Painting renewing his "way" of approaching the techniques of painting, sculpture and drawing.

Now more lucid and dreamier, now harder and more obsessive: over time he has consolidated the favorite theme of metamorphosis. The shades of iridescent colors enriching the representation with an emotional and symbolic charge are Mancuso’s most authentic stylistic code. Starting from recognizable figurative elements of the natural world, such as leaves, insects or parts of the body, the artist leads the observer to consider the compositional whole in a process that ends with a real oneiric introspection precisely through those shades capable of touching each of us in the depths.

"Pietro Mancuso “sings himself" with the imagination from a traditionally familiar world, with strong impressions of the countryside (his, just outside his native Valdobbiadene), in a fluid, imaginative, dreamlike universe, which belongs to him alone. Tangles of figures, naked but without physically evident nudity, indeed initially devoid of material physicality, which rapidly, while the painter's ideas become precise, acquire magical faculties, in an ensemble where strong colors and many dark backgrounds triumph."
