Artist: Aldo Tavella

Born in 1909, Aldo Tavella was the Veronese protagonist of twentieth-century painting: aware of the innovations of contemporary art, he always looked at the landscape and the figure with the aim of finding his own personal way of expressing himself. He lived through the drama of two wars and saw the beginning of the 21st century questioning the reality of form, the graphic sign as a writing of visual perception and space as an aesthetic condition.

He began painting in the 1920s, following his first exhibition in 1946, many participations in national competitions followed, where he won prizes and received recognition. His most illustrious achievement was certainly the XXV Venice International Art Biennale in 1950 at which he presented the work "Death of the Masks", selected by Carlo Carrà.

His pictorial production extends for more than half a century and is characterized by an absolutely spontaneous attitude that responds to the need to immortalize a momentary feeling and tell his own life, revealing the author's sensitive soul: there are many representations of his beloved city, Verona.

"His has always been an iconographic research capable of highlighting attitudes and sensitivity, especially with regards to the genre of portraiture, a means of expressing the internal experience of the subject, the possibility of knowing the character and investigating the psyche of the character through study of the body, almost satisfying his need to bring a non-visible reality back to known and therefore reassuring patterns."
