Artist: Aldo Tavella

Born in 1909, Aldo Tavella was the Veronese protagonist of twentieth-century painting: aware of contemporary art’s novelties, he always looked at the genres of landscape and figure to findi his own personal way of expression. Questioning the reality of shape, inquiring the graphic sign as the writing of visual perception and wondering about space as aesthetic condition, he lived through the drama of two wars and saw the beginning of the 21st century.

He began his career as a painter in the 1920s always comparing himself with others Veronese artists: after his first exhibition in 1946 followed many participations in national competitions where he won prizes and obtained recognition. The most important achievement was certainly the selection by Carlo Carrà of his piece “Death of the masks” for the 25th Venice International Biennale of Art in 1950.

His pictorial production lasting more than half a century is characterized by a totally spontaneous attitude to immortalize a momentary feeling and tell his life, revealing the sensitive soul of the author. Many are the representations of his beloved city, Verona. Of particular interest is the series dedicated to the civic park: we could easily reconstruct the variation of light in this place during the day and in the different seasons.
