From 1981 to 1984 he studied Communication Design at the Folkwangschule in Essen where he was a pupil of Inghe Osswald: this training clearly emerges in the communicative ability of his shots. He began photographing in that period, while working for the music magazine Spex.

In 1984, as soon as he finished his degree, he moved to New York becoming assistant to two photographers of European origin who introduced him to the world of documentary photography: Hans Namuth and Evelin Hofer, who at that time edited New York Nightlife, a column for Details Magazine. In the Big Apple environment Wowe published his shoots in Vanity Fair, New York Times, Tempo, Stern, London Observer and Telegraph Magazine.

1986 marks the beginning of a twelve-year collaboration with FAZ-Magazine, the weekly supplement of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. For this publication Wowe portrayed personalities of the contemporary artistic, intellectual and musical world, such as Andy Warhol, Frank Zappa, Philip Johnson, Susan Sontag , Keith Haring, William Burroughs, Run-DMC, IM Pei and Merce Cunningham, outlining the pop world of the 80s, where the innovative and experimental personalities of the previous decades achieved full recognition and media notoriety.
